There are many skills involved with a simple task like tooth brushing-- sequencing the steps, holding the brush, praxis and motor planning, engaging with oral motor sensory input...and the list goes on! Here are some tips and tricks to help you and your kids conquer this seemingly simple but challenging daily task!

Does your kid run into the bathroom and come out 10 seconds later saying “I’m done?!?"

  • Try a timer! Make a timer together so your child is an active participant in setting the duration of the task. Here are a few simple ways to make a timer together!

  •       Choose a 2-minute song – when the song is done, so are they! Have them sing a song in their head, hum it out loud, or try this SINGING TOOTHBRUSH!
  • Use a picture chart! This will help them to sequence all of the required steps:

  •      Use a checklist for weekly/daily compliance. Work towards completing all the checkmarks for a weekly or monthly prize!

Does your child struggle with holding the toothbrush or completing the task efficiently?

  •        Play activities and experiments! To practice holding the brush, play "car wash" with toy cars, as seen here. To warm your child up to the concept of brushing and visiting the dentist, read books and try these crafts. Try a science experiment with hard boiled eggs, or a homemade craft to visualize the importance of scrubbing efficiently.
And who doesn't have trouble with flossing?? (Even grown-ups need flossing reminders!)

Try this game at home with large legos and play dough! Or this one with smaller legos!

Good luck this week managing the sugar overload! We hope these ideas encourage and inspire a more enjoyable brushing experience for your little ones.
